"Modern Cookery Illustrated", by Lydia Chatterton, published by Odhams, 1940s. This lovely book seems to have been published during the 1940s as there are many references to food shortages, rations and replacing staple ingredients with alternatives. There are recipes using National Flour, the flour introduced in early 1940s, for health and food shortage reasons. Baking, meat, fish, poultry, preserving, making the most of tinned meat, lots of recipes for "mock" items and amongst the pages, a torn out article from a newspaper about making a Christmas Cake with rations. Book is in overall good condition for age, there is some wear to top of spine. Wonderful stuff! |
Two recipes leaflets for Fry's Cocoa, which seem to date from 1940s. Both of the leaflets are two pages with recipes on each side. One of them features a recipe for Chocolate Cake issued by the Ministry of Food which was set up during the War. References too to using dried egg, soya flour and dried milk, all used during rationing. Chocolate biscuits, flans, puddings, mock cream and sweets too. The leaflets have a mark to the top of each of them (presumably from storage) but have no tears and are a great addition to any 1940s recipe collection or Easter gift!
